It’s not just hard hats, getting dirty and working in the rain

30th November 2015 in Community Involvement
In collaboration with Lloyds Banking Group and BiTC, Sharkey continue to support the next generation by demonstrating the benefits of modern apprenticeships for school leavers.

Working in partnership with Business in the Community (BiTC), Lloyds Banking Group and staff from Liberton High School in Edinburgh, Sharkey have helped support 250 local pupils enter the working environment. The team delivered a series of seminars demonstrating the benefits of modern apprenticeships and how this relates to construction, showing the breadth of opportunities open to school leavers within the construction industry.

After a ‘challenging’ start to the sessions the team did, however, manage to change a number of preconceived understandings of the construction industry, and were able to illustrate the improved possibilities of achieving a more positive destination for many of the pupils after leaving full-time education. We helped demonstrate that there is a vast array of career opportunities open to both male and female school leavers within the industry and dispelled the initial perceptions that construction is only about hard hats, getting dirty and working in the rain!

After the sessions were concluded the team received some very positive feedback from the school regarding how our presentation was received, with some strong interest from the pupils in further exploring the modern apprenticeship programme. Further seminars have been requested by staff, with the potential of delivering health and safety, first aid, asbestos awareness and working at height training within the pupil’s standard timetable and as part of their curriculum.

The modern apprenticeship programme is very important to Sharkey.  This is clearly demonstrated by the programme’s expansion to include apprenticeships outwith traditional construction skill-sets, with it extending into the disciplines of Surveying, Estimating and Information Technology.  This investment has been acknowledged with Sharkey being recognised by Microsoft for our investment in IT apprenticeships at the national Microsoft Apprentice of the Year Awards 2015.  Sharkey’s IT department recently hired their second Microsoft modern apprentice, Connor Chappell in March 2015.
