Sharkey help restore an Edinburgh icon

31st May 2016 in Latest Projects
Sharkey are delighted to be working with the Arcadia Group to reinstate the iconic ‘Forsyth Sphere’ to its prominent place on Edinburgh’s historic skyline.

During the project we recently undertook to convert the existing building to a 100-bed hotel, it was discovered that the sphere had suffered severely from corrosion and consequent structural damage which required its removal off-site for extensive remedial action. The armillary sphere, which weighs in at 3 tonnes, has been undergoing restoration by our specialist heritage team who are working to reinstate it to its full Edwardian glory, ready to once again grace the Princes Street skyline.

Designed by the renowned British sculptor Gilbert Bayes, the Forsyth Sphere has been an integral feature of the building, and Edinburgh’s skyline, since its completion in 1907. Following the closure of R W Forsyth department store in the 1980s the building was subsequently purchased by the Arcadia Group.
