The Category A-listed mill, which comprises four buildings linked around a central courtyard has been transformed to create a 102-bedroom Hotel Indigo for the InterContinental Hotel Group. The building lay derelict for a number of years and was consequently in a state of substantial disrepair, presenting us with onerous challenges to ensure that the mill’s highly valuable architectural legacy was properly protected and faithfully restored. Shell works comprised the wholesale replacement of the roof and 400 windows and the careful restoration of existing stonework and brick vaulted ceilings. Internally, new lifts and staircases were provided to meet current regulations and enhance the customer experience. The fit-out stage of the project placed the emphasis on interior design and branding. As part of our quality assurance approach we provided samples, mock-up and options appraisals for many of the interior finishes. Sample rooms, replicas and prototypes produced in our in-house manufacturing workshop achieved a control standard for sign-off. It allowed a visualisation of the finished product and a mechanism to evolve design in real time.
