Located in one of Edinburgh’s busiest Old Town thoroughfares, alongside the main railway station, Sharkey’s conversion of the Category B-listed, one-time fruit and vegetable market warehouse provided a range of interesting challenges. Works to transform the 10,000-sqft, 2-storey building involved the careful protection and restoration of a number of existing historic features. These included exposing a structural frame incorporating unique wrought-iron, hexagonal ‘Phoenix’ columns, converting a hitherto unknown secure concrete vault to create an unusual bedroom and restoring a number of original features such as windows and doors.
