Malmaison Edinburgh City

Sharkey have recently completed the extension, conversion and refurbishment of the Category A listed Buchan House, creating a stunning 72-bedroom boutique hotel in the heart of Edinburgh’s World Heritage Site.
Project data
Location
Edinburgh
Duration
72 weeks
Value
£9m
Major alteration works to transform Buchan House, 44,000sqft of what was previously office space, have provided 72 en suite bedrooms, together with a restaurant, bar, coffee lounge and private dining facilities with lift access to all floors. 3,500sqft of additional space was created by the delicate insertion of a new-build 3-storey steel-framed extension in the internal courtyard, along with the floor plate extension and façade recladding of the 5-storey rear elevation. The striking conversion of Buchan House, which dates back to 1775, reversed many of the unsympathetic modern interventions whilst retaining, restoring and reinstating the original Georgian features.
TESTIMONIAL

"From the outset, the Sharkey team embraced the challenges, they did so with positivity and importantly, personality. The methodical nature to Sharkey’s project approach meant that all challenges were faced together as a team, ultimately concluding with a finished project which is an asset to one of Edinburgh’s most famous public squares"

- Andrew Marshall, Associate Director, 3D Reid Architects
